Discover the chemistry behind sun printing in this hands-on workshop, specially developed for British Science Week 2027 theme of Creativity. Pupils will learn about chemist John Herschel and his discovery of the cyanotype printing process.
Using specially treated paper and natural found materials, pupils will create their own cyanotype sun prints, exploring shape, texture, pattern and composition to create unique designs.
They'll then put their scientist hats on and investigate how exposure time affects the final print. By testing different exposure times and comparing their results, pupils will use scientific enquiry to find the conditions that produce the best sun print.
