The Gunpowder Railway
The Gunpowder Railway is a narrow gauge railway running roughly 1 km along the perimeter of the Royal Gunpowder Mills site. It is the only Heritate Military Railway in the UK, and holds a collection of 16 preserved ordanance wagons - the largest collection in the country.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a narrow gauge railway was used to transport materials around the site. Over the past decade a dedicated team of volunteers have constructed a 2 foot 6 inch gauge railway, reflecting this history. Our volunteer team comprises of drivers, guards, duty officers, who are all involved in the operation, construction and maintenance of the railway.
In 2025 the Gunpowder Railway transported over 2000 passengers.
